Baby photographs are a wonderful way to capture such a precious moment in your life. While the first couple of weeks might seem chaotic for new mums, this is a time where you truly bond as a young family. A newborn photoshoot not only creates memories that will last a lifetime, but this venture out into the world is also a great way to spend time with your new bundle of joy. Use this opportunity to watch all their tiny details, little fingers, toes, and button nose being photographed. It’s amazing to have all these lovely memories captured as it’s too easy to let them pass by. As an experienced newborn photographer in Glasgow, my clients often ask how they should prepare for their upcoming newborn photoshoot, so here are 5 ways to prepare for your special day together.
How To Get Sleeping Beauty Baby Photographs
Newborns are utterly adorable and especially when they’re in a deep and peaceful sleep. That’s why we advise if you can come into the studio while the baby is under 15 days old. This is the best period when your baby is so young and sleepy, with their joints able to move into positions easily.
I have found that giving your little one a bath before bringing them for their photoshoot works a treat. It seems to help them relax and feel sleepier as the day progresses.
Soothers are great too if you use them. They can really help during your photoshoot to help your baby relax especially if your little one needs a feed to settle. And can sometimes just be the perfect tool to help ease your baby into a nice deep sleep.
Bring A Bottle To Your Shoot
If you are not breastfeeding, it’s a good idea to bring a bottle to your newborn photoshoot. Being a model for the first time is hard work after all, and your little one might need to be fed between shoots. Having a bottle on hand will also help soothe your baby if they begin to cry and is so helpful when in the studio, and you always need more than you think you do! However, if you are breastfeeding and need some privacy that’s no problem either.
Feel Free To Bring Props
Some parents have certain items and props that they want to include in their baby photographs and feel free to bring them along. If you would like to incorporate any of these into your shoot just let me know about it before we meet up so we can plan out your shoot with them included. I would be more than happy to offer my personal advice as an experienced newborn photographer. Rest assured during your newborn photoshoot there will be plenty of accessories, baby clothes, props, and blankets to choose from so that we capture a wide range of styles and looks. Being creative is all part of the fun! And there is plenty of colours to choose from.
Don't Wait Until Birth To Book
You’ll be surprised at how fast your baby will grow and develop in the first couple of weeks after giving birth. That’s why it’s a good idea to book a newborn photographer a couple of months before you are due to give birth. This will guarantee that you can capture these precious moments as soon as possible, and don't miss out.
Your 20 week scan is a good time to start getting booked in the dairy. Your date them becomes a flexible date that can be changed for you, as rarely does anyone every give birth on their date. And even after you have given birth, you may have had a few things happen that mean you just need a little extra time before leaving home for any reason.
Newborn Photography Checklist
Prepare and pack a newborn photoshoot bag to make sure the day goes as smoothly as possible. Here’s everything I recommend new parents bring for their newborn photoshoot;
- Snacks are good. A newborn photoshoot can take several hours, so to prevent anyone from getting hungry or thirsty, make sure to bring a couple of snacks. There will be plenty of tea, coffee and water on offer at the studio.
- If you would like to include siblings into your shoot, bring something to keep them entertained. If it’s an iPad, please do bring headphones too, as we don’t want to disturb your new bundle of joy while their getting into sleepy poses.
- A soft hairbrush if your baby has been blessed with a full head of hair!
- A change of clothes and your baby changing bag as we all know accidents can happen. (although you will not need any clothing during your shoot as everything will be provided).
